Terraria Gigantica: The World Under Glass Dana Fritz
November 16, 2011-January 19, 2012
Dana Fritz examines natural and artificial elements in some of the world's largest vivaria in Terraria Gigantica: The World Under Glass. These immense structures straddle the line as safeguards to our natural ecosystems, while cultivating artificial landscapes in regions of the world inhospitable to particular biomes. Fritz explores the periphery of the well-manicured enclosures, where the visitor tours end and the idyllic pretense is exposed to reality. These liminal spaces reveal a tangling of natural and artificial components woven together to create something altogether different. The works display a palpable want and desire to preserve the natural world, but only under the controlled conditions of a geodesic laboratory.
