MasterWorks Concert Series: Variations on Tchaikovsky
January 6, 2012
The 2011-2012 MasterWorks Concert Series will feature the Tucson Symphony Orchestra recreating music composed from the 17th through 21st century.
The musical forms introduced by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, and generally referred to as "Classical," will be heard throughout the season. More varied than a festival of jazz, blues and rock, this series features five centuries of great music.
"Variations on Tchaikovsky" is Musical Director George Hanson's pragmatic appropriation of a wide range of Tchaikovsky's music. The ballet Sleeping Beauty gave the composer an opportunity to provide a melodious "Pas De Deux," later arrange by Stravinsky. Tchaikovsky's reverence for Mozart will be noted in his "Variations on a Rococo Theme," while his "Serenade in C minor" sings the beauty and extreme emotion that admittedly he noted, "I wrote from an inward impulse." This Tchaikovsky program is full variations.
