Midori - Concert Special
February 11, 2012
After making her debut with the New York Philharmonic as an 11-year old prodigy, Midori is now recognized for the evolution and scope of her 28-year career as a dazzlingly gifted performer. In her Tucson Symphony Orchestra debut, the world-renowned violinist will perform Brahms' beautiful Violin Concerto shimmering with expression. Midori's performance will cap an evening of jubilant music with a gypsy theme including Johann Strauss, Jr.'s lighthearted Gypsy Baron Overture, George Enescu's popular Romanian Rhapsody No. 2 and Liszt's lush Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.
The Brahms Violin Concerto in D major was written for violinist Joseph Joachim, who had been a pivotal figure in Brahms's rise as a composer. Brahms led the New Year's Day, 1879, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra premiere with Joachim as soloist. The concerto joins the Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn E minor as the "big four" in the violin concerto repertoire, though it is the sole work of that group written in the composer's maturity.
