PCC Wind Ensemble
December 3, 2009
Pima Community College Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Mark Nelson, performs a trio of American works encompassing major milestones of the 20th century as well as selections from the brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, flute quartet and percussion ensemble. The American works include "Slava!" by Leonard Bernstein written as a Burlesque-style overture to commemorate his good friend, Mstislav Rostropovich ("Slava" to his friends), assuming the music directorship of the National Symphony in the 1970s. It is followed by the orchestral tone-poem "American in Paris" by George Gershwin, one of the most prominent American composers of the 1920s and 1930s. "The Divertimento for Band" by Vincent Persichetti, written in the early 1950s, completes the trio. "Divertimento" is one of the true band classics of the 20th century featuring six movements of original band repertoire. Rounding out the program is "Toccata Marziale" by the eminent British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams written as an original band work for the commemoration of the British Empire Exhibition of 1924. The last piece on the program is "Sleigh Ride" by American composer Leroy Anderson to herald the beginning of the winter holiday season.
