Guatemalan Trunk Show and Sale
November 20-November 21, 2009
Tohono Chul Park will display the art of the Mayan women of Guatemala who live in the mountain villages of their ancestors, weaving colorful textiles using traditional back-strap looms. The intricate patterns of their weavings are both ancient and modern, reflecting symbols of the pre-Columbian past and the spiritualism of the weaver, through patterns revealed in dreams. Offered for sale at this special trunk show will be an array of traditional clothing from floral huipiles (square-cut blouse) to colorful rebozos (shawl), as well as contemporary purses, vests, table runners and eyeglass cases. Consider joining the Park on Saturday for a discussion of Guatemalan textiles with Gayle Caste?ada of the Museum of Ethnic Costumes (registration required) to learn more about this remarkable craft.
