Classic April - Czech it Out!
April 22-April 23, 2010
Music of the two best known Czech composers, Dvorak and Smetana, combined with the creative genius of cult favorite Leos Jan?cek, reveals why this land of gypsies and bohemians is so unique. The program is titled Czech It Out! in honor of the Overture to The Bartered Bride by Bedrich Smetana and the Symphony No. 6 by Anton?n Dvor?k. Bedrich Smetana was considered the father of Czech's national musical identity, principally with the tone poem Ma vlast ("My Fatherland") but also with his opera The Bartered Bride. Young Anton?n Dvor?k, who would inherit Smetana's mantle as Bohemia's musical ambassador, played viola in the orchestra at Bride's premiere. Although Dvor?k's Symphony No. 5 was composed at the request of Vienna Philharmonic Music Director Hans Richter, the world premiere of the work was still held in Prague in March, 1881. The Czech It Out! concerts have been dedicated to Alice Flaccus Nielsen by her sons Walter, Robert, and David Nielsen on the occasion of her 90th birthday. She wishes to share this honor with her mother, Eleanor Flaccus Pascoe, founder of the Tucson Symphony Women's Association and a faithful volunteer for the TSO for 50 years until her death in 1982.
