Mark Nelson Faculty Tuba Recital
April 16, 2009
| Read Reviews/CommentsHow many different combinations of instruments can perform in a tuba recital? Dr. Mark Nelson, chair of the Performing Arts Department at Pima Community College, is going to try several. His eclectic program for the solo tuba includes tuba and piano, tuba and whale ensemble via CD recording, two tubas and piano, and two euphoniums and two tubas playing as a quartet. The annual faculty tuba recital includes "Concert Piece for Tuba and Piano" by Libby Larsen, "Three Pieces," based on piano works by Johannes Brahms, arranged for tuba and piano, and "Sultry and Eccentric for Tuba and Piano" by James Grant. The program also includes "Beneath the Horizon III" for tuba and whale ensemble by Priscilla McClean, "Tuba Duos" for two tubas and piano by Walter Ross, "Tba4tet" and "Endgame" for tuba/euphonium quartet by James Grant. Nelson is accompanied by pianist Marie Sierra, along with guest performers Dr. Kelly Thomas on euphonium, University of Arizona graduate students Daniel Brown on tuba and Megan Evens on euphonium, and PCC music student Arthur Tyson on tuba.
